Look at me, Mom! I’m here, I’m actually in the Star Wars universe! Great Yoda, I’ve dreamed about this since George Lucas first melted my brain in a darkened theater when I was eight years old! Seriously, the sheer impression of being in the world of the films is just amazing. That’s why I chose to play as a Scout.

Simply put, Galaxies is full of incredible potential as a gaming experience yet is so unfriendly to newcomers that last night I actually witnessed someone begging for help on how to turn off the game. I’m sorry, but you know you’re in trouble when an interface is so confusing that you don’t even know how to turn it off. Of course, this is coming from the same folks who once made the letter “A” on your keyboard an instant invitation for death and dismemberment, so maybe it’s not too surprising.

Well, at least I now know how Han and Luke got so good at running and shooting at the same time. You do a lot of running away and shooting in Star Wars: Galaxies.

There’s a lot to admire about Galaxies. There’s rich character development, a player-run economy, diverse planets and environment. Plus John Williams music plays when you’re running for your life!

My recommendation? Wait a few months for them to iron out the problems, then join the game with a bunch of friends. You’ll save yourself a lot of the frustrations I went through until my friends showed me how to work around the various bugs.

I’ve been into MMO games since Ultima Online. In all that time, I’ve been waiting for two things. First, I’d like a “closed” economy where the value of currency wasn’t dictated by the developers “injecting” super powerful items into the game. Second, I’d like a game that allows me to successfully pursue a non-combat role (like crafting) without taking a back-seat to the fighter-classes. So far, Star Wars Galaxies seems to offer both of those.

The biggest problem right now is that the game is currently really buggy. It’s obvious that the game wasn’t ready to release, but scuttlebutt has it that the word came down from LucasArts that the game was shipping regardless. I don’t know if that’s true, but the result is that they’re now patching every couple days with the latest fixes. The result is that there’s a kind of “avoid the bug!” meta-game going on right now.

Bottom line, I just don’t see the $15 a month value in Galaxies I’ll probably end up cancelling after my “free” month runs out unless I can get a good group of people to play with every so often.
